Writing and Ranching, Our Lifestyle
I enjoy writing, not only works of fiction, but also stories about my life, both with words and photographs, about life in Montana. We have cattle and horses, and lots of other animals as well. I enjoy telling their stories, and about our adventures in cattle ranching.
On our ranch, the Rocking Seven Mile, we run a few head of cattle. Writing about our adventures through the changing seasons each year, I attempt to tell a story about modern day cattle ranching.
Our cattle are raised completely naturally. The calves are born out in the open. Well, their mothers seek shelter when calving, but they live their lives on the rolling hills and prairie of south central Montana.
We strongly believe that everyone should know the people who raise their food. In fact we're passionate about the local food movement that is continuing to grow across the country.
We practice rotational grazing, and believe me, it takes practice to perfect this type of system. I would love to see the grasslands of the west return to the health and productivity of the days when the buffalo roamed.
Horses have always been a part of my life. We have a small herd we call the Wild Bunch. Although they are tame and most are rideable, there are a few that are rescue types. They love it when their humans come visit them. Although they are used to move cattle and for pleasure riding, a lot of the time they get to run free.
I also love to read, so I am writing book reviews about books I've read. Some are histories of the American West, which I find fascinating. But I like all types of books, both fiction and non-fiction.
I also tell the story about getting my own book, my first attempt at fiction writing, published.
Plus, another book is also in the works, a sequel to the first. I hope to have it completed by spring since winter is much more conducive to sitting at the computer than summertime.
So click on a few buttons and enjoy my site, and make sure to check out my blog, which is full of photos of our ranching adventures, plus all the animals living on the Seven Mile.
A Story of the West A Story of the West is a novel about the open range ranching days of the 1880s. It is an exciting story about a family's adventures starting a ranch on the lawless frontier in Montana Territory.
